What is AmeriCorps Eldon?
AmeriCorps Eldon, formerly PAVE AmeriCorps, began in 2004 as a formal volunteer program for the Eldon School District. After receiving its first AmeriCorps grant, PAVE AmeriCorps had its first national service Corps in 2006.
AmeriCorps Eldon is a nationally funded, grant-based program in Eldon, Missouri. There are a lot of AmeriCorps programs all over the country. AmeriCorps Eldon is specific to Eldon and has programming focused mainly in the Eldon schools and community.
AmeriCorps Eldon serves at-risk students in the Eldon School District where over half of the school population is considered to be at-risk. AmeriCorps Eldon Members provide academic interventions to at-risk students in kindergarten through 12th grade and provide activities and support to reduce childhood obesity. The program serves over 500 Eldon School District students each year and consistently meets or exceeds all program goals.
The Eldon School District is broken up into 5 different campuses: South Elementary (Preschool-2nd grade), Upper Elementary (3rd-5th grade), Middle School (6th-8th grade), High School (9th-12th grade), and Mustang Academy (alternative high school). While academic coaches are assigned to one campus, they may be engaged in a variety of activities throughout the day by flexing into different classrooms or even tutoring in multiple subject areas in a given day. Members also support interventions that happen during before- and after-school times.
What will I do if I’m an Academic Coach?
If you are selected as an Academic Coach, you will be placed at one of the five (5) campuses at the Eldon School District. You may be assigned a specific subject area in communication arts (English/reading, science, or social studies) or math or you may flex between more than one subject area. Some of our Coaches will also support increased physical activity and engagement in wellness activities with our students.
You will hold a regular schedule of, generally, 7:15-4:15pm with additional service opportunities available before or after for student enrichment programming and occasionally on weekends. During your regular service day, you will provide one-on-one or small group tutoring based on the needs at your assigned campus or classroom.
In addition to supporting student academic success, Coaches who also serve in a wellness capacity may support organized games during recess, promote healthy food choices during meal times, and assist with various afterschool intramurals (basketball, volleyball, archery, wrestling, soccer, running club).
All AmeriCorps State and National Members are expected to serve in a full-time capacity for twelve (12) months and complete a minimum of 1700 hours to be eligible for their end-of-service benefits.
Why should I serve?
There are many benefits to serving as an AmeriCorps Member. Aside from the intrinsic rewards that come from helping people in need, there are other tangible reasons you may choose to serve.
-Monthly Living Allowance: Approximately $1,466 before taxes
